Dalcroze Eurythmics

A unique, exciting, and powerful education in music for individuals of all ages and levels. Rhythmic movement, intense listening, and improvisation unlock creativity, nurture imagination, and open the doors to enriched and enlivened music making. Musical concepts are explored through social and interactive methods that invite the students to trust their ideas and develop their own intuitions. Eurythmics trains the body in rhythm and dynamics; Solfège trains the ear, eye and voice in pitch, melody and harmony; Improvisation puts it all together according to the student's own invention- in movements, with voice, on an instrument. For children, and often for adult beginners, these three aspects of the Dalcroze work are integrated in a single class, in which the students move, sing, and play as they engage in a variety of activities involving listening, responding, and inventing. As a precursor to or in tandem with private music lessons, Dalcroze Eurhythmics will create a platform for accelerated and deep learning in all musicians.

Gamelan

A gamelan is an Indonesian orchestra consisting of metallophones, drums, and gongs.  The set of instruments is a distinct entity, hand- made and tuned to be played together — instruments from different gamelans are not interchangeable.  We will play traditional Balinese music – bright, lively and easy to learn.  Come explore these instruments and participate in the ultimate musical team sport.

Exploring Rhythm and Uncommon Meter

The music of our Western culture (popular, classical and folk) is most commonly structured in groups of 2, 3 and 4 beats.  This class will explore meter which is a little more unusual.  Through games, chants, movement activities and instrument play, students we will begin to explore music of different styles and cultures, to become more familiar with, and begin to make sense of meters including 5/4, 7/4 and 9/4.  This class will be informally structured so that everyone can participate and be challenged at their own level.  The adult class will give you ideas for working with children on these issues, as well as challenge your own comfort level!  Guaranteed to be tons of fun!

She says, “It is everyone’s birthright to feel comfortable singing Happy Birthday and dancing at their own wedding!”  As a private piano teacher, she promotes a love for making music and fondly recalls the happiness that her own par-ticipation in music activities with friends and family has played from childhood through adolescence and into adulthood.

Orff/Schulwerk Method

The Orff approach to music uses forms of everyday activities in the purpose of music creation by  individuals. This includes singing in groups and performing voice, instrumental music, rhymes and playing percussive instruments. The music generated is largely improvisational and original tonal construction, and this builds a sense of confidence and interest in the process of creative thinking. Much Orff/Schulwerk music is based on simple but forceful variations on rhythmic patterns. This makes for very simple and beautiful musical forms, which are easily learned by young children. and can also be used for adults.
